What you need to know about Compression Socks

What are compression socks and how do I know if I need them?

Compression socks are socks that provide compression to the legs that gradually decreases up the leg to support blood flow upward toward your heart. The result is improved circulation that can help prevent varicose veins, spider veins, and swelling, plus it helps to revitalize your legs.

Signs that compression socks may be right for you:

  1. You experience tired and achy legs.

  2. You notice swelling in your legs, especially with prolonged standing or when on your feet for long periods of time.

  3. You have visible spider veins or varicose veins.

  4. When travelling you experience swelling and/or fatigue in your legs.

Why Compression Socks?

Compression socks help to keep your legs healthy and improve circulation. Compression socks are useful for people who find themselves standing or being on their feet for long periods of time for example at work, for use during pregnancy or for people who have reduced circulation due to a medical condition. We see lots of athletes using the socks when exercising to support good circulation during activity.

The socks are also really helpful for people travelling long distances. Long distance travel (>4hrs) increases the risk of blood clots forming in the veins of the legs. Leg discomfort also increases during travel, blood circulation in the legs is decreased and movement is restricted. Lack of movement can result in common symptoms of heavy, fatigued legs, leg pain or swollen feet and ankles. An effective way to decrease these symptoms during travel is to wear graduated compression socks. The socks reduce the risk of acute conditions during long distance travel by increasing circulation and the function of the venous system.

Graduated compression socks apply external pressure to the leg to support the veins and promote blood flow towards the heart and are vital for the prevention of varicose veins.
