Golf season is already upon us! As a golfer it is a great idea to make sure that you remember some key tasks in order to prevent injury so that you do not miss any time in this short Alberta season.
Firstly, proper attire is key to a successful season. Being comfortable when golfing can be challenging when the weather changes so rapidly. It is important to carry multiple layers of protective clothing in your golf bag including lightweight materials to help wick moisture away and a waterproof layer for those sporadic rain showers.
Whether you are walking the course or taking a cart, essential supportive footwear is required. Be sure to measure your foot size annually and change your footwear as soon as it becomes worn. Incorrect footwear can increase your risk of lower body injury due to misalignment and poor biomechanics during your swing and when walking.
Do you require orthotics in your golf shoes? An orthotic that is custom made for your golf shoe will enable to you to be sure you're doing all that you can to prevent injury when you take your first step on the course.
Do you wear a glove when golfing? A glove is an excellent way to ensure proper grip technique which will in turn prevent wrist and elbow injuries such as Golfer’s Elbow.
Taking time to warm up is very important. With a busy lifestyle we can often find ourselves running late to the course and not having enough time to warm up. Gentle stretches with the use of your club even for just a few minutes can prevent an injury. Hitting some balls at the driving range prior to stepping up to the first tee is essential. Plus it will help improve your game!
Staying hydrated when on the course will help prevent injury. Not only do we require hydration for our internal organs but also our muscles require it to prevent tightening and lactic acid build up. Make sure you have a bottle of water handy in your bag or cart.
